車匿及馬既到城已。所見城空曠雨淚而入。其馬揵陟在宮門外。欲入門觀瞻太子坐臥之處。不見太子。淚下如流。一切人民眷屬。唯見車匿及馬向宮。各舉兩手噭喚大哭。流淚滿面而說偈言。
After Chandaka and the horse arrived at the city, seeing the city deserted, they entered shedding tears. The horse Kaṇṭhaka, outside the palace gate, wished to enter through the gate to gaze upon the place where the prince sat and reposed. Not seeing the prince, its tears fell like a flowing stream. When the ministers, common people, and family saw only Chandaka and the horse heading toward the palace, each raised both hands, wailing and weeping loudly, tears streaming across their faces, and spoke a verse:
