At that time, after the World-Honoured One had attained Buddhahood, the Venerable Udāyin said to the Buddha: "Why did the Tathāgata take all the priceless neck-ornaments from his body and bestow them on Yaśodharā without being able to make her heart rejoice?" He pursued and killed it, stripped its skin, placed it in water, and boiled it. When it was nearly done, the broth boiled away completely. At that time the prince said to his wife: 'The meat is not yet fully cooked. Go fetch some more water.' His wife then went to fetch water. After she left, the prince was famished, unable to endure it. He immediately ate the lizard meat, finishing it entirely, leaving not even a scrap. When the prince's wife returned with the water, she asked her husband: 'Where is the lizard meat from here?' The prince replied: 'The lizard suddenly came back to life and has already run away.' His wife did not believe that such a sudden thing could happen: 'The lizard meat was already cooked, how could it run away?' Her heart did not believe it, and she thought: 'My husband was surely starving and ate it all, lying to me that it ran away.' Harried by resentment, her heart was constantly unhappy. Several years later his father died. The ministers then welcomed the prince and anointed him as sovereign. Having become king, he gave all the various treasures he obtained to his consort, but the consort was not pleased. The king said to the consort: 'Why are you unhappy in your expression?' His wife then spoke a verse to reply to the king:
