The above constitutes the Chen period of five rulers and 44 years. There were 1,232 temples: 1,700 new temples across the state, 68 built by officials, and more than 300 major temples within the city walls; 32,000 monks and nuns; and 11 works translated. The Record of the Rise of Territories states: "The Liang capital of Emperor Wu formerly had more than 700 temples, but during the rebellion of Hou Jing they were burned down and destroyed. When the Chen unified the realm, both the state and the common people fully restored them. Spires and pagodas faced one another, arrayed like stars across the imperial capital of Yangzhou. The wealth of scriptures and images cannot be fully described."
