West of the city wall of Bingzhou in the Tang dynasty, there was a mountain temple named Tongzi Temple. It had a great statue with a seated height of over one hundred and seventy feet. The Emperor revered the teachings of Śākya. In the late years of the Xianqing reign era, he toured Bingzhou and visited this temple in person together with the Empress. They also visited Kaihua Temple in the northern valley, which had a great statue two hundred feet tall. They paid reverence, gazed upon them, and marveled at their rarity. They generously donated treasures, wealth, and clothing, and the consorts and inner palace ladies all made donations as well. An imperial decree was also issued to Dou Gui and other prefectural officials ordering them to swiftly adorn and fully ornament the sacred visages, and entrusting them to make the ground before the shrines spacious. When they returned to the capital, in the seventh month of autumn in the second year of the Longshuo reign era, palace officials brought out two kāṣāyas, and imperial envoys were dispatched to rush them to the great statues of the two temples. On the day the statue of Tongzi Temple was draped in the kāṣāya, from dawn to dusk it emitted five-colored light that illuminated the cliffs and crags and lit up the mountains and rivers; it also entered the small Buddhas of the southern shrine, gloriously illuminating the halls and chambers. Clergy and laity gazing upon it numbered tens of millions. Among high and low in the city who turned toward goodness upon seeing this, seven or eight out of ten households did so. It is known to all and need not be elaborated.
