At Faju Temple in the suburban district of Yizhou under the Tang, there was a painting of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, seated back upon a corded chair with his feet dangling down, eight or nine inches high. The original image had been painted by Zhang Sengyou. In the seventh month of the second year of Linde, a monk of this temple traced a copy. It emitted light that appeared and vanished abruptly like a golden ring, largely identical to the original light. Thus, whenever it was successively copied and produced, they all emitted light without exception. In the eighth month of that year, an edict ordered a copy brought into the palace for worship. At present, whether painted and worshipped by monastics or laypersons within or outside the capital, they all emit light. Truly one knows that the Buddha's power is unfathomable. (Each household has a copy; they are not cited separately here.)
