In the second year of Linde of the Tang, at Mount Sanxue north of Jinshui County in Jianzhou (formerly belonging to Yizhou), there was a temple monk named Huiyu, who was then temporarily permitted to reside at Konghui Temple in the suburban district of Yizhou. In the first year of Linde, he intentionally traveled from the prefecture to the place of the auspicious gilded bronze image at Changsha Temple in Jingzhou. Making a vow with utmost sincerity, he intended to paint a replica of the auspicious image to make offerings to it. He sought out the skilled artisan Zhang Jingyan, having him keep pure according to the Dharma. He had already painted six figures without any miraculous response. When he reached the seventh figure, it immediately emitted divine light of five colors, thoroughly illuminating inside and outside so that all near and far beheld it. After seven days, the light gradually faded away. The monastics and laypeople were delighted beyond words. Huiyu brought this image to Chang'an before having decorated it, intending also to paint the attendant bodhisattvas, holy monks, offering implements, and so forth to its left and right. At that time, an imperial edict had ordered the skilled artisans of the capital to go to the Department of State Affairs (Zhongtai), and had the officials and scholars supervise them, commissioning the painting of the Record of the Western Regions in sixty fascicles with forty fascicles of illustrations. Because there were no fine hands outside, Huiyu went to the Department of State Affairs and engaged the artisan Fan Changshou to decorate and paint the image in the main hall. On the night of the seventh day of the sixth month, at the beginning of the third watch, the image emitted five-colored radiant light that shone completely outside the hall. A hall guard went outside to relieve himself; seeing fire issuing from the hall, he thought there was a fire inside and ran in fright, shouting and screaming. Inside the hall, ten officials on duty and over thirty soldiers, because of the hot weather, were all sleeping naked. The light shone upon their bodies, and everyone saw each other's bodies fully exposed; startled, they got up and put on their clothes. Only one official, surnamed Shi and named Huaicang, had ordinarily lacked faith: he saw only the outside light, while looking at his own body it was purely black. The light shone until dawn before it ceased. That Shi Huaicang confessed and reproached himself, repenting his faults with complete sincerity, and only then did he see the light illuminating his body and gaining brightness. The officials and soldiers of the various courtyards, hearing the shouts and seeing the light, all came to view it. Those who heard and saw it all resolved their minds to maintain fasts and precepts for the rest of their lives. The officials each painted a copy to take home and make offerings to. (As monastics and laypeople in the capital all know of this, it is not cited separately here.)
