Furthermore, the Dacheng lianhua zang jing says: "Receiving the Buddha's prohibitive precepts but not guarding them in the future, each claiming 'I am right,' regarding the Mahāyāna Dharma they are like a dark night; each says of themselves, 'I have attained the Buddha-dharma.' The bitter hardships they suffer in the Iron Spear Hell are difficult to describe; emerging from hell, they are mute, deaf, and blind, and do not see the saddharma." The Anan qing jielü lun (Treatise on Ānanda Requesting Precepts and Vinaya) says: "If monks, nuns, white-robed laity, and others, when reading sūtras, vinaya, and śāstras, converse while walking with scrolls in hand, turning them over, according to the reckoning of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven they commit a grave duṣkṛta; as secondary retribution, they will fall among roe deer for two hundred million years, their spines constantly broken with unendurable pain. Holding sūtras, vinaya, and śāstras while engaging in neutral, frivolous talk also incurs the previous retribution. Or if someone places sūtras and images in front of the eaves of chambers and halls, according to the reckoning of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, for eight hundred years they commit a grave duṣkṛta; as secondary retribution, they will fall among pigs and dogs for two hundred million years. If they attain human rebirth, for one hundred million years their bodies will constantly be drifters, restless and without autonomy."
