During the Western Jin, the śramaṇa Monk Jing of Shu Commandery left household life in his youth and became renowned for his ascetic practices. Serving as the abbot of Sanxian Temple in Shu, he chanted the Lotus Sūtra. Constantly reciting the scripture in the mountains, when the time came at night, he would consistently inspire tigers to come and crouch before him to listen, leaving only when the fascicle was concluded. Whenever he chanted, four attendants were consistently seen standing by his side. Although advanced in years, his diligent devotion became even more strenuous, and he thus concluded his career.
