Furthermore, the *Daśacakra-sūtra* states: “For example, in the past there was a king named Fude (Puṇya). When someone committed a crime or offense and was bound in chains, the king did not wish to take his life and handed him over to a mad elephant. At that time, the mad elephant grabbed his two feet and was about to dash him to the ground, but seeing that this person wore dyed robes, the mad elephant immediately set him down gently on the ground, not daring to harm him. Sitting down facing him, it licked his feet with its trunk, giving rise to a mind of loving-kindness. Son of good family, an elephant is a beast, yet seeing a person in dyed robes, it did not inflict evil or harbor thoughts of harm. Yet in future ages, there will be caṇḍāla kings who, seeing someone in my Dharma who has gone forth—whether qualified to be a vessel of the Dharma or not qualified to be a vessel of the Dharma—will intentionally persecute and distress them, or even take their lives. After their lives end, they will inevitably fall into Avīci Hell.”
