Furthermore, the Sūtra of the Ten Wheels states: For example, in the past there was a king named Fude (Meritorious Virtue). If someone committed a crime or offence, they were bound, but the king did not wish to take their life; he had them delivered to a mad elephant. At that time, the mad elephant grabbed the person's two feet and was about to throw them to the ground; but seeing that this person wore dyed robes, the mad elephant slowly placed them on the ground, not daring to harm them. Sitting facing them, it licked their feet with its trunk and gave rise to a mind of compassion. Sons of good family, an elephant is an animal, yet seeing a person in dyed robes, it did not inflict evil or harbor a wish to harm; how much less in the future age! If there are caṇḍāla kings who, seeing someone in my teaching who has gone forth—whether fit to be a vessel of the Dharma or not—deliberately harass them or take their life, after their life ends they will surely fall into Avīci Hell.
