Furthermore, the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra* says: "As for the traits of a woman, if she receives respectful treatment, she makes her husband's mind arrogant; if she renounces respectful treatment, she makes her husband's mind fearful. Women are like this: they constantly give affliction, worry, and fear to others. How could one be intimate with or fond of them? As it is told, a king had a daughter named Kumuda. There was a fisherman named Śubhaka. Traveling along the road, he saw the princess from afar in a tall pavilion. Seeing her face in the window, he formed an imagined attachment to her and his mind could not let go for even a moment. As the days and months passed, he could not eat or drink. His mother asked him the cause, and he answered her truthfully: 'I saw the princess, and my mind cannot forget her.' The mother reasoned with her son, saying: 'You are a base person; the princess is noble and exalted—she cannot be obtained.' The son said: 'My heart yearns for her and cannot forget her for a moment. If I do not get my wish, I cannot go on living.' For the sake of her son, the mother entered the royal palace, constantly delivering fat fish and fowl meat to present to the princess without taking payment. Wondering at this, the princess asked her, 'What wish do you seek?' The mother said to the princess: 'May you dismiss your attendants, and I will speak the truth. I have an only son who reveres and longs for you, Princess; his passion has knotted into an illness and his life will not last long. May you condescend to have pity on him and grant him his life.' The princess said: 'Go, and on the fifteenth day of the month, stay behind the statue of the deity in such-and-such shrine.' The mother returned and told her son: 'Your wish has been granted,' informing him as above. Having bathed and put on new clothes, he stayed behind the statue of the deity. When the time came, the princess said to her royal father: 'I have encountered an inauspicious sign and must go to the shrine to pray for auspicious blessings.' The king said: 'Very good.' He immediately prepared five hundred carriages to go out to the shrine. Having arrived, she ordered all her attendants to halt at the gate, and entered the shrine alone. The deity thought: 'This should not be. The king is a benefactor; this base person must not be allowed to defile and disgrace the princess.' He immediately suppressed this man, making him sleep heavily without waking. When the princess entered, she saw that his sleep was profound, and shook him, but he did not awaken. She then left a necklace worth a hundred thousand liang of gold for him and departed. Later, when the man awoke, he saw the necklace and asked the people around, learning that the princess had come. His wish having failed, he felt such sorrow, resentment, and anguish that the fire of lust erupted within him, and he burned himself to death. From this evidence one knows that the minds of women do not choose between noble and base: they only follow their desires."
