Furthermore, the *Sarvāstivāda-śāstra* says: "It is better to place one's limbs into the mouth of a venomous serpent than to violate a woman. A serpent harms a person in three ways: some harm a person upon being seen; some harm a person upon contact; some harm a person by biting. A woman also has three harms: if one looks upon a woman and gives rise to lustful thoughts, it destroys one's wholesome dharmas; if one touches a woman's body, one commits a middling offense and destroys one's wholesome dharmas; if one engages in sexual intercourse with her, one commits a grave offense and destroys one's wholesome dharmas. First, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, it harms this single body; if one is harmed by a woman, it harms countless bodies. Second, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, it harms a karmically resultant, indeterminate body; if one is harmed by a woman, it harms the body of wholesome dharmas. Third, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, it harms the body of the five consciousnesses; if one is harmed by a woman, it harms the body of the six consciousnesses. Fourth, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, one may still enter the pure assembly; if one is harmed by a woman, one cannot remain together with the Saṃgha. Fifth, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, one may be born in the heavens or encounter sages and worthies among humans; if one is harmed by a woman, one enters the three wretched realms. Sixth, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, one may still attain the four fruits of the śramaṇa; if one is harmed by a woman, one derives no benefit from the Noble Eightfold Path. Seventh, if one is harmed by a venomous serpent, others will generate compassionate thoughts and rescue him; if one is harmed by a woman, the multitudes will abandon him together, having no joy or delight in their hearts. Because of these reasons, it is better to place one's limbs into the mouth of a venomous serpent than ever to touch a woman with them."
