Furthermore, the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā-śāstra states: “There are four things that cause one to regress from and lose wisdom, which a bodhisattva should stay far away from. What are the four? First, not respecting the Dharma and the preacher of the Dharma. Second, secretly keeping and begrudging essential teachings. Third, creating obstacles for those who delight in the Dharma and destroying their intention to listen. Fourth, harboring arrogance, elevating oneself, and looking down on others. There are another four things by which one attains wisdom, which one should constantly cultivate. What are the four? First, revering the Dharma and the preacher of the Dharma. Second, preaching the Dharma to others as it was heard and recited, with a pure mind and without seeking gain or sustenance. Third, knowing that wisdom is attained through broad learning, and thus striving tirelessly to seek it as though extinguishing a fire on one's head. Fourth, upholding without forgetting the Dharma as it was heard, valuing practice in accordance with the teaching rather than mere words.”
