Fu Wanshou of the Song was a native of Pingchang. In the nineteenth year of the Yuanjia reign era, while serving as an administrative consultant in the Guard Office in Guangling, he took leave to return to his province. Just past the beginning of the fourth watch, when he first crossed the river, the long waves were flowing calmly. But upon reaching mid-river, the wind arose like an arrow. It was also pitch-dark, and they did not know which way to turn. Wanshou had long revered the Dharma; facing this crisis, he single-mindedly took refuge in Avalokiteśvara, reciting without pause. Presently, he and several people in the boat saw a light on the northern shore resembling a village fire. Rejoicing together, they said, "This must be the fires of Ouyang!" They turned the boat and headed for it, arriving before dawn. When they asked the locals, all said, "No one lit a fire last night." Only then did they realize it was divine power; upon arrival, he held a vegetarian feast.
