27.51

宋顧邁。吳郡人也。奉法甚謹。為衛府行參軍。元嘉十九年。亦自都還廣陵。發石頭城便逆湖。朔風至橫決風勢未弭。而舟人務進。既至中江波浪方壯。邁單船孤征憂危無計。誦觀世音經得十許遍。風勢漸歇浪亦稍小。既而中流屢聞奇香芬馥不歇。邁心獨嘉。故歸誦不輟。遂以安濟。

Gu Mai of the Song was a native of Wu Commandery. He revered the Dharma with great reverence. Serving as an administrative consultant in the Guard Office, in the nineteenth year of the Yuanjia reign era, he was also returning from the capital to Guangling. Setting out from Shitou City, he sailed against the current of the lake. A north wind arose and blew fiercely across, its force unabating, yet the boatmen insisted on advancing. Once they reached mid-river, the waves grew massive. Mai's solitary boat traveled alone, and amidst danger and dread, he was at a loss for what to do. He recited the *Avalokiteśvara Sūtra* about ten times, and the force of the wind gradually subsided, while the waves also diminished slightly. Soon afterward, in the middle of the stream, he repeatedly smelled an extraordinary fragrance, richly sweet and unceasing. Mai was inwardly overjoyed, and so he returned to reciting without interruption, thereby crossing safely.
