Traveling south for a thousand li, one arrives at the country of Dhānyakaṭaka, belonging to South India. East and west of the capital, occupying the mountain valleys, there are great monasteries on each side, which ancient kings built for the Buddha. Carving the mountain and clearing the stones, they laid them out in extreme splendor, where sages and saints roamed and rested. Less than a thousand years after the Buddha's demise, there were a thousand ordinary monks here; on the day the retreat ended, all realized the fruit of no-more-learning (arhatship) and flew away soaring into space. Now it is silent and deserted. In that place was the Treatise Master Bhāviveka (in Tang, "Clear Discernment"), that is, the author of the Prajñāpradīpa-śāstra. Before Avalokiteśvara, he abstained from grains and only drank water for three years, resolving his aspiration and praying to wait to see Maitreya. Avalokiteśvara then manifested his physical body to him: "Now, at the great mountain cliff south of the city, at the place of the Vajradhara deity, recite the Vajra-mantra for three years." The deity instructed him, saying: "Inside this cliff's rock is an Asura palace. If you petition according to the Dharma, the stone wall will open. You can enter immediately to await Maitreya's appearance; I shall inform you." After another three years, he empowered mustard seeds with mantras and struck the stone wall; it suddenly burst wide open. At that time, a gathering of hundreds of thousands watched in amazement and sighing. The treatise master stepped over the threshold and repeatedly called back, but only six people followed him in. The rest thought it was a pit of venomous snakes. Thereupon, the stone door immediately closed again like a wall. Further traveling south for over six thousand li, one reaches the country of Malakūṭa, which is the southernmost coastal border of Jambudvīpa. The mountains produce camphor, and there are white sandalwood trees. There are also gansala incense trees; with pine trunks and no leaves, their fragrance is like ice and snow: this is camphor. South of this, in the great ocean, there is a heavenly palace, the place where the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara permanently resides (formerly called Guanshiyin Bodhisattva). Bordering the sea is a city, which is the ancient Simhala country. Entering the ocean for about three thousand li, unless one gathers a large party, one cannot reach it. Over four thousand li northwest of this, passing through countries along the way, all are filled with divine wonders. Several thousand li in the southeast corner of the country is Nārikeladvīpa; the people are three feet tall, with bird beaks, and eat only coconuts.
