Furthermore, the *Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra* states: If any sentient being gives sweet water to people, or covers a well or spring, fearing that poisonous snakes might fall into the well and that travelers who drink from it would suffer distress, when their life ends they will be born in the Trayastriṃśa Heaven to enjoy the pleasures of the five desires. When their life there ends, if they obtain a human body, they will be cherished and honored by kings. If one sees someone gravely ill whose throat rattles, whose remaining life is not yet ended, and gives them drinks or gives them wealth to sustain their life, when their life ends they will be born in the Deep Water Heaven, enjoying happiness like Śakra. When their life in heaven ends, wandering according to their karma, they will not fall into the three miserable paths and will obtain a human body, from birth to birth suffering no sickness or distress, free of disturbance. If any sentient being keeps the precepts and, seeing the assembly of bhikṣus, offers fans to bring them cool air so they can read and recite scriptures, when their life ends they will be born in the Wind-Walking Heaven, where fragrant breezes blow upon them with peerless delight. If any sentient being builds bridges and boats at river crossings, ferrying precept-holders with a good mind, and also ferrying other people who do no evil, when their life ends they will be born in the Garland-Bearing Heaven to enjoy the pleasures of the five desires, and when their life ends, in the human realm they will manage the king's treasury.
