Furthermore, the Kuśalamūlasaṃparigraha-sūtra says: The Buddha told Śāriputra, "A bodhisattva possesses four dharmas by which he will never backslide from unexcelled bodhi. What are the four? First, if he sees a stūpa or shrine falling into ruin, he undertakes its repair and restoration, whether with a clod of earth, plaster, or even a single brick. Second, if at a crossroads where many people observe, he raises a stūpa or makes an image to serve as a cause of virtuous merit in mindful recollection of the Buddha, painting inside the stūpa scenes of turning the wheel of the Dharma, leaving home, or even entering nirvāṇa between the twin trees. Third, if he sees the monastic saṃgha engaged in disputes between two factions, he diligently seeks expedient means to bring about their concord. Fourth, if he sees the Buddha's Dharma about to perish, he is able to recite, chant, and expound it, even down to a single verse, so that the Dharma is not cut off; for the sake of protecting the Dharma, he reverently supports Dharma masters, wholeheartedly protecting the Dharma without sparing his own life. If a bodhisattva accomplishes these four dharmas, in life after life he will become a wheel-turning sage king; he will attain great bodily strength like Nārāyaṇa; abandoning the four continents, he will go forth from home, and will be able at will to cultivate the four brahmavihāras; after his life ends, he will be born in heaven as a Mahābrahmā king, and will ultimately accomplish the unexcelled path. Therefore, a wise person who wishes to seek the Buddha's path should train in this manner."
