Furthermore, the Wen shi jing (Sūtra on the Bathhouse) says: The Buddha told the elder Jīvaka, "The method of bathing should employ seven articles to remove seven ailments and obtain seven blessed retributions. What are the seven articles? First, kindling fire; second, pure water; third, bath powder; fourth, ghee and oil; fifth, pure ash; sixth, willow twigs; seventh, undergarments. This is the method of bathing. What is meant by removing the seven ailments? First, the four elements become peaceful and secure; second, eliminating wind [disorders]; third, eliminating damp numbness; fourth, eliminating severe cold; fifth, eliminating feverish heat; sixth, eliminating dirt and filth; seventh, making the body light and agile and the eyes clear and bright. These are called removing the seven ailments. As for obtaining the seven blessings: first, the four elements are free of illness and one is always at peace wherever born; second, one is born pure with a handsome countenance; third, the body is constantly fragrant and one's clothes are clean and spotless; fourth, the skin is soft and moist, with great majesty and virtuous radiance; fifth, one has many attendants to brush away dust and dirt; sixth, the mouth and teeth are fragrant and fine, and whatever one says is reverently obeyed; seventh, clothing comes naturally wherever one is born."
