Spirit-startling incense (jingjingxiang). The Shizhou ji states: 'The Isle of Juku lies within the Western Sea. Upon it are many divine mansions of perfected immortals. At the north gate of the palace is a large tree resembling a sweetgum tree, yet its fragrant aroma can be smelled for several hundred li. It is called the "soul-returning tree." When struck, the tree makes a sound like the bellow of an ox, causing those who hear it to tremble with fright. Its root and core are cut and boiled in a jade cauldron to extract the sap, which is then further simmered gently so that it can be rolled into pills. It is called "spirit-startling incense," or "spirit-quaking," or "soul-reviving incense," or "bird-human spirit," or "death-averting incense." Its fragrance is smelled for several hundred li; corpses lying upon the ground revive upon smelling its scent.'
