...an imperial edict permitted it to be opened. Digging more than a zhang deep, they obtained two ancient stele inscriptions, both erected by the Northern Zhou and Northern Wei. Once the śarīra was brought out, it was shown everywhere to clergy and laity. There was a blind man whose eyes had been dark for years; glaring with wide-open eyes, he suddenly saw clearly and purely. People from inside and outside the capital rushed to the stupa site, tens of thousands daily. When the śarīra was held aloft, what onlookers saw was not the same: some saw it like jade, with white light penetrating inside and out; some saw it as green; some saw the Buddha's form; some saw bodhisattvas and holy monks; some saw red light; some saw five-coloured mixed light; and some did not see it at all. Inquiring into their backgrounds, it was because throughout their lives they had committed many grave transgressions; when good spiritual friends instructed them to repent thoroughly to the utmost, or when some burned their heads, scorched their fingers, or pricked their blood to sprinkle the ground with profound sincerity, they finally were able to see it. The diverse manifestations cannot be recorded completely.
