"He asked again: 'For what reason does the Buddha's bowl remain on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa for fifteen years?' They answered, saying: 'Before the World-Honoured One entered nirvāṇa, he was at the Vihāra on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa. He divided the light of his white curl into hundreds of thousands of portions, leaving behind one portion of light to bestow upon the disciples of the final Dharma age. Whether keeping the precepts or breaking the precepts, down to devas, nāgas, spirits, and the like: upon anyone who can produce a single thought of good within the Tathāgata's Dharma, this radiance is bestowed. When the World-Honoured One first attained enlightenment, the Four Heavenly Kings offered the Buddha stone bowls; only the World-Honoured One was able to use them, and no other person could hold and use them. After the Tathāgata's extinction, they were placed on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, together with the light of the white curl, to bring benefit. In the final Dharma age, people will follow the Buddha's bowl, bestowing food upon bhikṣus in other lands; and assemblies such as devas and nāgas will comply with the Buddha's intent, so that even if people commit unprincipled acts, they will ultimately not see faults.'"
