Furthermore, regarding the Zonglü (Palm) Temple in Xigu Valley of Zhongnan: recently, a man saw a monk who said he wished to hire him to carry his bundle to the temple. He asked where the temple was, and [the monk] said it was in Xigu Valley, atop the eastern ridge of Juming. The man carried the bundle for him and was approaching the temple when he saw a monk coming from the southern cliff, about fifty chi tall, calling out to him. The man declined and turned to go back. [The monk] told him: "Every day you enter the mountains to gather firewood, you may take the leftover cakes from the vegetarian meal beneath the firewood to eat; you must not speak of the cause of obtaining them." He followed his words and obtained cakes every day. His wife found it strange and interrogated him; having no choice, he told her, and consequently became mute for over a year. Later he saw two monks entering the valley; the man waved his hand and pointed to his mouth. After doing this three times, he was able to speak. That man died recently. Nowadays, those who enter the mountain often hear the sound of a bell near the Juming ridge, and often see extraordinary monks. Recently there was a monk who, hearing of this, encountered [one] entering the valley. The monk suspected it was Zonglü Temple and asked: "Is the Venerable One not a monk of Zonglü Temple?" He said: "I am. Would you like to follow the Venerable One and go?" [The monk] said: "You may follow along." He only heard the whistling wind sound beside his ears, exceedingly swift. In his mind he thought: "Why must this one be a sage? Perhaps he is leading me into the deep mountains to abandon and exhaust me." The moment he gave rise to this secret thought, the monk ahead disappeared. He was exceedingly regretful. Turning back, it took three days before he reached the mouth of the valley. He then founded a hermitage at Bishi Fortress; by this means, the hermitage still exists, but that monk's end is unknown.
