42.39

述曰。一切僧食並須平等無問凡聖。上下均普。故僧祇律云。若檀越行食多與上座者。上座應問。一切僧盡得爾許不。答止上座得耳。應言一切平等與。若言盡得者應受。僧上座法不得隨下便食。待行遍唱等供已然後得食。上座之法當徐徐食。不得速食竟在前出去。應待行水隨順祝願已然後乃出。

The commentary states: All Saṃgha food must be shared equally, regardless of ordinary person or saint; high and low should be universally equal. Therefore, the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "If a dānapati distributes food and gives more to the senior monk, the senior monk should ask, 'Do all the monks get this much?' If the answer is, 'Only the senior monk receives this,' he should say, 'Give equally to all.' If the answer is that all receive it, he should accept it. The rule for the senior monk of the Saṃgha is that he may not begin eating as soon as food is served to him; he must wait until the food has been distributed throughout and the equality of offerings is proclaimed before he may eat. The rule for the senior monk is to eat slowly; he must not finish eating quickly and leave ahead of others. He should wait until the water is distributed and the dedication of merit and blessing are performed before he leaves."
