I comment: Lately I have seen many people eating timely food during improper times. What are these? Namely, monastics and laypeople in border regions, hearing that the Vinaya permits drinking fruit juices and syrups, immediately eat the juice of dried dates, or raw pears, grapes, and pomegranates; without crushing them to drink the juice, they eat them whole with their seeds. Or, although they crush them for juice, they do not strain it clear, but take the turbid, thick juice and eat it together with the dregs. Or some, hearing that the śāluka fruit syrup is permitted, because they suffer from heat illnesses, take raw lotus root and eat it raw with its roots. Or some take clear congee liquid to drink; or, having neither hunger nor thirst in their bodies, consume butter, oil, honey, rock sugar, and the like at improper times; or boil apricot kernels to make thick broth. Such abuses are not solitary and cannot be fully recounted. If judged by the *Sarvāstivāda-vinaya*, anyone other than the aforementioned five kinds of persons, such as long-distance travelers, must not casually consume them; doing so immediately breaks the fast. Seeing that many repeatedly commit this offense, I have made a separate note of it.
