The foolish cling to birth and death / And do not know the true Dharma. / Foolish, unenlightened, and lacking wisdom, / They are like dwelling in a dark room: / Whatever they contact, they run about in confusion, / Unable to distinguish cold from heat. / Though cultivating and training for long, / They still do not know the Dharma; / Even if they engage in practice, / They only incur calamity for themselves. / Pleasing their minds, they commit evil, / Bringing upon themselves heavy misfortune. / What the foolish hope for, / They do not think will lead to suffering; / Only on the verge of falling into perilous places / Do they realize it was not good. / The foolish and stupid commit evil, / Unable to understand it themselves; / Calamity pursues them, consuming them in flames, / Their guilt flaring ablaze. / Foolish people delight in slumber, / Sorrows and grief constantly arising, / In a dim, dark room, / Like a silkworm inside a cocoon. / The foolish delight in evil, / Not ceasing even unto death; / Though given good words, / They turn around and consider one an enemy. / While the crime is not yet ripe, / The fool takes it as a spectacle; / When the time of its ripening arrives, / They personally suffer great calamity. / The foolish are fond of wealth and lust, / Unsated day and night, / Like a parched mountain gorge / Where pouring water never fills it. / The foolish make many errors, / Met with wrath wherever they go; / Even if beaten with rods and canes, / They still will not stop themselves.
