Moreover, the Sūtra on Respecting the Master says: 'Three times a day one should attend to the master's comings and goings. If one comes to attend upon the master and does not see him, one should hold a clod of earth, grass, or wood to serve as a token. When the weather is hot, one should fan the master three times every day. If there is a bhikṣu who, regarding that master or preceptor (upādhyāya), does not give rise to a reverent mind but speaks of his shortcomings, in a future life there is a separate minor hell named Repulse and Strike, through which he must pass. Having fallen into that place, he will have one body and four heads, his body entirely scorched. In that hell there are furthermore worms named Hook-Beaks, which constantly eat the base of his tongue. If one has heard from another even a single four-line verse, through a thousand thousand kalpas each, carrying that preceptor, ācārya, and others upon one's shoulders, or bearing them on one's back and atop one's head, one still could not repay them.'
