The Liezi states: Four hundred thousand li east of the central province, one reaches the country of Jiaoyao, where the people are one foot and five inches tall. At the northeastern extreme there are people named Jing people, who are nine inches tall. In the twenty-sixth year of the First Emperor of Qin, there were giants five zhang tall with footprints of six chi; all the Yi and Di barbarians submitted. Twelve of them appeared in Lintao. Confucius said: 'The Jiaoyao are three chi tall, which is the limit of shortness; the tall do not exceed ten [chi], which is the limit of the numbers.' Now there were people of five zhang; these were born outside of the ordinary categories. That year, Qin had just annexed the six kingdoms and, delighting in this as an auspicious omen, cast twelve metal statues in their likeness. To the south they garrisoned the Five Ridges, and to the north they built the Great Wall, extending west to Lintao and east to Liaodong, spanning thousands of li. Thus, the giants first appeared in Lintao, making clear where the disaster and disorder would arise. Twelve years later, Qin fell. (The seventeen verifications above are each recorded according to their original sources.)
