爾時迦夷王者我身是。聰叡大臣者舍利弗是。野狐王者調達是。諸比丘。調達往昔詐得眷屬。今亦如是。故佛說偈云。
At that time, the king of Vārāṇasī was myself; the intelligent minister was Śāriputra; and the wild fox king was Devadatta. Monks, in the past Devadatta falsely gained a retinue, and so it is now as well. Therefore the Buddha spoke a verse:
