57.17

復有一鬼言。我常趣溷欲噉食糞。有大群鬼捉杖驅我。不得近廁。口中爛臭飢困無賴。何因如此。目連答言。汝前世時作佛圖主。有諸白衣供養眾僧供辨食具。汝以麁供設客僧。細者自食。

Another ghost said: 'I constantly go to the latrine wanting to eat dung, but a large crowd of ghosts wielding clubs drives me away so that I cannot get near the privy. My mouth is rotten and foul, and I am famished and destitute. Why is this?' Maudgalyāyana replied: 'In your past life, you were the head of a monastery. When laypeople made offerings to the saṃgha and prepared provisions and food vessels, you served the coarse offerings to visiting monks and ate the fine ones yourself.'
