"'I shall observe him, / and subdue that fool: / seeing the fool's anger blazing fiercely, / the wise one subdues it with silent stillness. / What is not strength yet regarded as strength, / is the strength of that fool; / the fool defies and strays far from the Dharma, / having nothing to do with the Way. / If one who possesses great strength / is able to be forbearing toward the inferior, / this then is supreme forbearance; / without strength, how could there be forbearance? / In the face of extreme revilement from another, / the one with great strength is able to be forbearing; / this then is supreme forbearance; / without strength, how could there be forbearance? / Toward oneself and toward others, / well protect against great terrors; / knowing that the other's anger is blazing fiercely, / return to guard one's own silent stillness. / Thus both benefits are fully provided, / benefiting oneself and also benefiting others. / The one who is called a fool, / is so because he does not see the Dharma. / The fool thinks he has overcome forbearance, / and redoubles his foul speech; / he does not know that by enduring his revilement, / one always triumphs over him. / Practicing forbearance toward the superior / is named forbearance born of fear; / practicing forbearance toward an equal / is named forbearance to end dispute; / practicing forbearance toward an inferior, / this is named supreme forbearance.'"
