High in the mountains to the southwest in Shu, there is a creature resembling a monkey, seven feet tall, capable of walking upright like a human, and swift at chasing people. It is named jiaguo, also called mahua, or jueyuan. It watches for women traveling along the road; if there are attractive ones, it abducts and carries them off without anyone knowing. If travelers pass near it, even if they tie themselves together with long ropes, they still cannot escape. This creature can distinguish the scent of men and women, which is why it takes women without the men realizing. When it captures a woman, it takes her as a mate. Those who bear no children can never return for the rest of their lives. After ten years, their bodies all come to resemble it; their minds also become bewildered, and they no longer think of returning. If one bears a child, it carries the child and returns it to her family. The offspring born all have human form. If any family refuses to raise them, their mother immediately dies, so in fear none dare refuse to rear them. When they grow up, they are no different from humans, and all take Yang as their surname. Therefore, in the southwest of Shu today, there are many people surnamed Yang, almost all of whom are descendants of the jiaguo and mahua.
