In the deep mountains of the Yue region, there is a bird the size of a turtledove and blue-green in color, named the zhi bird. It bores into large trees to make its nest, which is like a five- or six-pint vessel, with an entrance a few inches in diameter. The rim is decorated all around with lime, with red and white clearly divided, looking like an archery target. Woodcutters who see such a tree avoid it and depart. Sometimes in the dark of night the bird is not seen, and the bird also knows that people cannot see it, so it calls out: ‘Du-du, go up! Tomorrow, hurry and go up! Du-du, go down! Tomorrow, you should hurry and go down!’ If it does not tell them to leave, but merely chatters and laughs, then people may remain and chop wood. If any defilement or foulness reaches where it roosts, a tiger will come and stand guard all night; if the people do not leave, it harms them. When seen by day, its form is that of a bird; when heard by night, its cry is also that of a bird. Sometimes when it wants to amuse itself, it takes human form, three feet tall, goes into a ravine to catch stone crabs, and roasts them by human fires. People must not offend it. The people of Yue say that this bird is the ancestor of the Yue shamans.
