Liu Ling of the Song: it is not known from where he came. He lived in Donglu Cheng village in Jinling. He respected the Dharma quite considerably, erecting a one-room retreat in his residence and occasionally holding fast-gatherings. On the twenty-seventh day of the third month in the ninth year of the Yuanjia reign era, his father died suddenly of illness. Shamans and diviners all said that three more persons in the household would perish. In a neighboring house there was a Daoist libationer whose surname was Wei and given name Po. He frequently used talismans and registers to deceive and convert the villagers. He said to Ling, 'The misfortune and calamity of your household have not yet ended; it is because you serve an illustrious deity. If you serve the Great Dao, you will certainly receive blessings and protection. If you do not change your mind, your whole lineage will be annihilated in the future.' Ling then hurriedly invited the libationer and ceased serving the Dharma. Po said, 'You ought to burn away the scriptures and images; only then will the disaster be eliminated.' He then closed the door of the retreat and set fire to burn it. The flames raged for more than a day, but what burned was only the building; the scriptures, images, banners, and thrones remained dignified as before. In the middle of the night, the image also emitted brilliant light. At that time, there were some twenty libationers; some were terrified of the numinous proof and secretly slipped away. Po and his disciples were still resolute and would not stop; disheveling their hair, performing the Pace of Yu, and holding knives and ropes, they shouted, 'Banish the Buddha back to the barbarian lands! He must not stay in China to bring harm to the people!' That evening, it felt to Ling as though someone were beating him. He collapsed suddenly to the ground. His family members helped him up, but he showed only a faint breath remaining, and he was crippled and unable to move. At that time, an ulcer broke out in the body of the Daoist priest Wei Po, discharging two pints of pus daily; within less than a month, after enduring torment, he died. All the other companions contracted leprosy. His neighbor Shuiqiu He, the Grand Protector of Dong'an, transmitted this to Wuyi of Dongyang, and at the time there were also many who witnessed it.
