Furthermore, the *Madhyamāgama Sūtra* states: "In the past, when the human lifespan in Jambudvīpa was eighty thousand years, a wheel-turning sage king appeared in the world named King Gaurava. There was a tree named King Supratiṣṭha-Nyagrodha, which had five branches. The first branch was for the king and queen to eat from; the second branch was for the crown prince and ministers to eat from; the third branch was for the people of the country to eat from; the fourth branch was for śramaṇas and brahmins to eat from; and the fifth branch was eaten by birds and beasts. The fruits of the nyagrodha tree were as large as a two-sheng jar, tasting like soft honey balls. There was no guardian, nor did people steal from one another. A certain man came, starving, parched, and extremely emaciated, his face haggard, wishing to obtain fruit to eat. Going up to the king of trees, after eating his fill of the fruit, he broke and snapped its branches, took the fruit, and departed. A certain deity resided in reliance upon the king of nyagrodha trees. He thought: 'How strange! The people of Jambudvīpa are ungrateful and lack reciprocity. I would rather make the tree bear no fruit.' Thereupon it bore no fruit. Another man arrived, starving, parched, and extremely emaciated, wishing to eat the fruit. Going to the tree, he saw that the tree was fruitless. He immediately went to King Gaurava and said: 'May the Heavenly King know: King Supratiṣṭha-Nyagrodha tree has no fruit.' Having heard this, in the time it takes a strong man to bend and stretch his arm, the king went to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven and stood before Śakra, saying: 'Kauśika, know that the nyagrodha tree king bears no fruit.' Thereupon Śakra and King Gaurava, in the time it takes a strong man to bend and stretch an arm, went to King Supratiṣṭha-Nyagrodha tree and stood not far away. Having conjured a great deluge, violent gale, and rainstorm, it uprooted the tree and stood it upside down. At this, the branch deity who resided in the king of trees was stricken with sorrow, grief, and distress because of this, weeping with streaming tears as he stood before Śakra. Śakra asked: 'Why are you weeping?' That deity replied: 'Know that the great deluge, violent gale, and rainstorm have uprooted it and turned it upside down. I pray that King Supratiṣṭha-Nyagrodha tree may be restored to its original state.' Thereupon the Lord of Gods again conjured a great deluge, violent gale, and rainstorm, causing the nyagrodha tree king to be restored immediately as before."
