The Vinayamātṛkā-śāstra also states: There are five kinds of trees that a bhikṣu must not fell: first, the Bodhi tree; second, spirit trees; third, jambu trees; fourth, asita trees; fifth, śmaśāna trees. If a bhikṣu plants three kinds of trees for the sake of the Three Jewels—first, fruit trees; second, flowering trees; third, foliage trees—this brings only merit and no offense. There was a bhikṣu who kept the retreat upon a tree; he tied logs to make a bed and did not come down from the tree, discharging waste beneath the tree. In this tree there was a great spirit, who was enraged and struck this bhikṣu to death. The Buddha said, "From now on, I do not permit bhikṣus to keep retreats upon trees or discharge waste beneath trees." There are five kinds of trees that must not be felled: first, the Bodhi tree; second, spirit trees; third, large trees in the middle of roads; fourth, śmaśāna trees; fifth, nyagrodha trees. If a Buddha-stūpa is ruined, or a saṃghārāma is ruined, four kinds may be felled to burn for timber, excluding the Bodhi tree. There are five kinds of trees that may be made use of: first, those burnt by fire; second, those burnt by nāga-fire; third, those that dried up naturally; fourth, those blown down by the wind; fifth, those carried away by water. Such trees as these may be made use of.
