64.64

如正法念經云。孔雀菩薩為諸天說。若有悲心是人則去涅槃不遠名大莊嚴。於五道眾生若起悲心能破煩惱。云何地獄眾生而起悲心。此諸眾生於自業所誑。由此怨家之所造作。得不可喻種種苦。大地獄等一百三十六處。眾生墮中地裂擘坼。斷截燒煮無救無歸。東西馳走求哀自免不可得脫。而起悲心則得增長無量梵福。

As the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra says: The Peacock Bodhisattva preached to the devas: If someone possesses a mind of compassion, that person is not far from nirvāṇa, which is called the Great Adornment. If one gives rise to a compassionate mind toward sentient beings in the five destinies, it can destroy defilements. How should one give rise to a compassionate mind toward sentient beings in the hells? These sentient beings are deceived by their own karma; produced by this very enemy, they undergo various sufferings beyond analogy. In the one hundred and thirty-six places of the great hells and others, sentient beings fall into them, where the ground splits and tears apart, and they are severed, burned, and boiled, with none to rescue them and nowhere to take refuge. Running back and forth, seeking mercy to be spared, they cannot escape. But if one gives rise to a mind of compassion, one will increase boundless Brahmā-blessings.
