"A cluster of foam is a simile for form; / feeling is like a bubble on water; / perception is compared to a mirage in the heat; / formations are like a plantain tree; / a vessel of illusion is a simile for consciousness: / thus do the Buddhas speak. / One should observe these essentials, / carefully examine and reflect upon them: / empty and hollow, ascertain them to be so; / one does not see them to have permanence. / If one wishes to see the aggregates, it should be thus; / true wisdom says all are so. / When the three things are severed, / know that the body is worth nothing: / life exhausted, warmth and breath / abandon the body and pass away. / When dead and lying on the ground, / like grass, it knows nothing. / Observing its condition to be like this, / it is merely an illusion, yet the foolish crave it. / Cease, cease! It provides no security, / nor has it any solidity. / Knowing the five aggregates to be thus, / a monk should be vigorous. / Therefore, day and night, / one should awaken oneself and be mindful of correct wisdom, / practice the path of quiescent extinction; / the elimination of conditioned action is the highest peace and joy."
