問曰。遠離殺生者。云何殺生等相應說。答曰。殺生有八種。一故心。二他。三定不定眾生相。四疑心。五起捨命方便。六作。七不作相。八無作相。是等名為殺生身業。身口意業名為殺生。

Question: As for abstaining from killing living beings, how should the characteristics of killing living beings and so forth be explained? Answer: Killing living beings has eight factors: first, intentional mind; second, another; third, definite or indefinite perception of a sentient being; fourth, doubtful mind; fifth, initiating preparatory means to terminate life; sixth, active performance (vijñapti); seventh, characteristic of non-action; eighth, characteristic of unmanifest [karma] (avijñapti). These are named the bodily karma of killing living beings; the karma of body, speech, and mind is named killing living beings.
