第一貪欲蓋者。謂端坐修禪心生欲覺。妄念相續求之不已。遂致生患。如智度論。術婆伽以思王女。欲心內發尚能燒身。延及天祠。況生欲毒。熾而不燒。諸善法心若著欲無由近道。故論偈云。

First is the hindrance of sensual desire: it refers to sitting upright in meditation and sensual thoughts arise in the mind, with erroneous thoughts continuing without end and seeking them unceasingly, eventually causing calamity. As the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states, because Śūrpaka thought of the king's daughter, lust arose within his mind and was able to burn his body, spreading even to the heavenly shrine. How much more so when the poison of lust arises, burning fiercely without ceasing! If the mind of good dharmas is attached to desire, there is no way to approach the path. Thus a verse in the treatise says:
