As the Buddha said, false speech has ten offenses: 'What are the ten? First, one's breath is constantly foul. Second, good spirits stay far from him, while non-humans find their opportunity. Third, even when he speaks true words, people do not believe or accept them. Fourth, when wise people deliberate in counsel, he is never included. Fifth, he is constantly slandered, and his ugly, evil reputation is heard throughout the world. Sixth, he is not respected by others, and even when he gives orders, people do not follow them. Seventh, he is constantly beset by much sorrow. Eighth, he plants the karmic causes and conditions of slander. Ninth, when his body breaks up and life ends, he will fall into hell. Tenth, if he comes forth as a human, he is constantly slandered. Not committing such various things as these is non-false speech, which is called virtuous restraint.' As the Buddha said, drinking alcohol has thirty-six faults (as fully explained below in the section on the five precepts). Not committing these four offenses constitutes the bodily virtuous restraint; not uttering false speech constitutes the vocal virtuous restraint; these form the restraint of the five precepts.
