After Emperor Gaozu of Song pacified Huan Xuan, he appointed Liu Yi as General Pacifying the Army and Regional Inspector of Jingzhou. Upon arriving in the province, [Liu Yi] immediately arrested the abbot of Niumu Temple, claiming that he had hidden a boy of the Huan clan and ordained him as a novice monk, and he had four monks executed as well. Later that night, he saw this monk in a dream come and say: 'Why did you wrongfully execute me, a poor monk? I have already reported this to the Celestial Emperor, and I fear you will not last long either.' Consequently, he fell ill and could not eat, growing daily more emaciated. When he was setting out for the capital of Yang[zhou], he frequently engaged in disputes and encroached upon the chief ministers. Emperor Gaozu of Song therefore sent troops on a punitive expedition against him. Defeated, Yi broke out alone on horseback by night and fled to Niumu Temple. A monk said to the Pacifying General: 'In the past you wrongfully executed my master and our monks; by our principles we do not hold grudges. But why should you come here? Our late master has repeatedly displayed spiritual signs, saying, "The Celestial Emperor shall seize the Pacifying General and kill him at the temple."' Yi then sighed with dismay, went out to the hill behind the temple, climbed a large tree, and hanged himself. (This one record of resonance is from the Record of Vengeful Spirits [Yuanhun zhi].)
