Greedy desire is truly painful; / Ordinary people, inverted and confused, / Falsely give rise to notions of pleasure. / The wise see the suffering: / Seeing the suffering, they sever it. / Experiencing desire without satiation / Is like drinking salt water: / It only increases one's thirst; / Because it increases thirst, / How could there be any pleasure? / Just like a dog chewing / On a dry bone smeared with blood: / Saliva gathers and combines, / And it imagines there is delicious flavor; / Greedy desire is also like this: / Within what is flavorless, / By the power of perverse delusion, / One deems it the experience of flavor. / Therefore know that sensual desire / Is truly painful, its pleasure empty; / Only when there is no greedy seeking / Can it be called true joy.
