8.174

爾時菩薩於夜下生。當欲降神入胎時。彼摩耶當其夜。白淨飯王言。大王當知。我從今夜欲受八禁清淨齋戒。所謂不殺生。不偷盜。不婬妷。不妄語。不飲酒。不兩舌。不惡口。不無義語。又願不貪欲。不瞋恚。不愚癡。不生邪見。我當正見。諸眾生等禁戒齋法。我當受持。我今繫念恒常勤行。於諸眾生當起慈心。時淨飯王即報夫人言。心所愛樂隨意而行。我今亦捨國王之位隨汝所行。而有偈言。

At that time, the Bodhisattva descended to be born at night. When he was about to descend his spirit and enter the womb, on that very night Māyā addressed King Śuddhodana, saying: "Great King, you should know that beginning tonight I wish to receive the eight pure prohibitions and fast, namely: not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, not drinking alcohol, not speaking with a double tongue, not using harsh words, and not speaking idle talk. Further, I vow not to be greedy, not to be angry, not to be deluded, and not to give rise to wrong views; I will maintain right views. The rules of restraint and fasting of all sentient beings I shall receive and uphold. I now bind my mindfulness and constantly practice them diligently; toward all sentient beings I shall give rise to a mind of loving-kindness." King Śuddhodana then replied to the queen, saying: "Whatever your heart delights in, act as you wish. I now also renounce the status of a king to follow along with what you practice."
