83.19

又譬喻經云。羅閱祇國沙門。坐自誓曰。我不得道終不起欲睡眠心。作錐長八寸刺兩髀。痛不得眠。一年得道。

Furthermore, the Avadāna-sūtra says: A śramaṇa in the kingdom of Rājagṛha sat and vowed: "If I do not attain the Way, I will never give rise to the desire to sleep." He made an awl eight inches long and stabbed his two thighs with it; due to the pain he could not sleep, and in one year he attained the Way.
