Furthermore, the Āgama sutras state: 'Regarding high, broad, and great beds: if beneath the seat the legs are one foot six inches long, it is not high; if four feet wide, it is not broad; if eight feet long, it is not great. Only when exceeding these measures is it called a high, broad, and great bed.' There are further eight kinds of beds: the first four are distinguished according to the material; their substance being precious, it is improper to sit on them. The latter four are distinguished according to persons; being great, even if spread on the ground, intended for revered persons, it is also improper to sit on them: first, gold beds; second, silver beds; third, ivory beds; fourth, horn beds; fifth, Buddha beds; sixth, pratyekabuddha beds; seventh, arhat beds; eighth, teacher and saṃgha beds. (Beds and seats of parents are not included in this prohibition.)
