One should know that all illnesses of sentient beings take greed, anger, and pride as their causes. From causes there are effects, yielding this painful retribution; it is not because of failing to obtain medicinal liquor that illness cannot be cured. Thus the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* states: 'All sentient beings have four poisoned arrows, which are the causes of illness. What are the four? First, greed; second, anger; third, folly; fourth, arrogance. When there are causes of illness, then illness arises: namely, passionate heat, lung ailments, rising breath and vomiting, numbness and aching of the skin and body, mental confusion and distress, diarrhea, retching, hiccuping, strangury, pain in the eyes and ears, swelling and fullness in the abdomen and back, madness, emaciation, and possession by demonic ghosts. With such various physical and mental illnesses, if one recognizes the root of illness, cuts off evil, and cultivates the good, the painful retributions of the three periods of time will be permanently eliminated and not received. If one does not contemplate the principle, even if one uses all the medicinal liquors under heaven to treat it, the illness will only increase and be difficult to cure.'
