Furthermore, the Mahāsāṃghika, Daśādhyāya, and Mahīśāsaka Vinayas state that if there is no other cure, an ill monk is permitted to consume garlic, allowed seven days. He remains in a small room off to one side and may not sleep on the beds and cushions of the Saṃgha. He may not go to the communal latrines or to the lecture hall. Furthermore, he may not accept invitations or eat amidst the Saṃgha. He may not approach the Buddha to prostrate, but is permitted to make prostrations from afar in a downwind position. When the seven days are complete, having bathed and perfumed his robes, only then may he enter the assembly. If someone has a sore and a physician instructs that it must be treated with aromatics, the Buddha directs that one must first make offerings to the Buddha, and only afterward is one permitted to smear it on the body, still remaining in a secluded spot, entirely in accordance with the prior procedure. (Those who have left household life are pure by nature, yet they are still made to perform procedures like this; how much less should defiled worldly ordinary persons rashly indulge in eating them!)"
