Furthermore, the Vinayamātṛkā says: "There are two kinds of gas: the first is upper gas (belching), and the second is lower gas (flatulence). When upper gas is about to come out, do not face others and open the mouth to let it out; you must turn your face toward an unoccupied place, open your mouth, and let it out. When lower gas is about to come out, it is not permitted to release it amidst the assembly; you must use an expedient means to go outside to an unoccupied place to let it out, and only then return and enter the assembly. Do not cause the assembly to censure or disdain you. When entering a stūpa, you should not release lower gas; beneath a tree enshrining a stūpa, or amidst the great assembly, you must not release gas in any of these places. In the presence of a teacher, a venerable one, or a senior monk, you also must not release lower gas with sound. If there is an illness in the belly and it is urgent, you should go outside, not causing others to give rise to disgust and contempt."
