Then the World-Honoured One arose from his seat, proceeded to the ordination platform, and ascended the platform from the north. The bhikṣus presented the bowls, and the World-Honoured One personally received them. He also addressed Rāhula: 'Bring me my broken bowl.' Once the Buddha had received the bowl, he cast it into the air, where it ascended to the Summit of Existence. In this sequence, the [buddhas] identically named Śākyamuni successively threw [their bowls], one after another like strung beads. Having ascended to the peak of the Form Realm, they descended one by one directly back to the ordination platform. The hundreds of billions of buddhas who had assembled also ordered their attendants to take their bowls and each bestowed them upon Śākyamuni Buddha, joining together to maintain them and cause future evil monks and nuns to feel shame and repentance. When the World-Honoured One received them, he threw them up again into the upper realms, and one after another in succession they returned to the platform. At that time the World-Honoured One transformed that broken earthenware bowl so that its form was like the golden banners of the devas, emitting great light that illuminated the lands of the ten directions.
